The vanished flags of this work do not flutter. The barrier tape, symbolized in turn by the play of bright colors, gives concrete form to the empty signified whose vanished signifier we associate with a flag. We can hear the flags in the wind, we recognize them – yet no longer know which nation they belong to or whether it still exists and whether its border guards are still there after transfixing the waving flag into rigor mortis.
